News

Dutch Competition

Ajax had quite a good season in the First Division A, and because none of the teams stood out, Ajax was competing for the title uptil the end. Unfortunately for Ajax the goal difference and mutual results were not decisive in case two teams had the same amount of point, but a decisiove match needed to be played. That was the case this season when DWS and Ajax ended both with 37 points. In the competition Ajax had won twice from DWS, but in the decisive match DWS was soon ahead with 3-0 and won the match with 5-2 and so became the division champion. In the champions competition DWS ended last and Eindhoven became the new domestic champion.

Beker

There was no Dutch Cup competition during this season.

Lineup

At the end of the season Ajax often plays with the same lineup: Eddy Pieters Graafland (goalkeeper), Ger van Mourik and Hans Boskamp (defense), Bobby Haarms, Gerrit Krist and Co Bouwens (midfield and stopper spil), Ge van Dijk, Wim Huis, Rinus Michels, Klaas Bakker and Arend van der Wel (attack). Unknown whether Van Dijk was still the captain, he did not play all matches. Rolf Leeser (15) and Jan Ditmeijer (10) played regularly in attack, mostly instead of Ge van Dijk and Wim Huis. The following players also played official matches: Theo de Groot (6), Leen Bartels (5), Piet Burgers (2), Toon Standaar (2), Aad Visser (2), Jan Draayer (1), Jan van Drecht (1), Cor Geelhuizen (1), Ad Waldeck (1) en Jan Wolterink (1).

Walter Crook was the trainer.

Start of Professional Soccer

End of 1953 the NBVB (Dutch Professional Soccer Association) was founded. Jan de Natris became general president and technical leader in the first board. The intention was to start playing a competition in season 1954-55.
