Amsterdam 7x

Summary

Yearly tournament starting as Amsterdam 700 before the start of season 1975-76, honoring the 700th anniversary of Amsterdam. It continued until 1992. Ajax was always one of the participants. In addition three other, often international, teams were invited. Until 1985-86 the tournament was played via a knockout system, from 1986-87 onwards the team with most points over two matches won. This tournament was not organized by Ajax (also played in the Olympic Stadium, not De Meer) and in the early editions there was also no agreement over participation of Ajax. For the first edition for a long time FC Amsterdam was supposed to participate as the organization could not meet Ajax' financial demands. Only close to the tournament FC Amsterdam withdrew (for a financial compensation) and Ajax agred to join.
