Dutch Competition

In the First Division West Ajax started poorly, partly because there were some new players in the attack, and because it was faced with some injuries. Later on the results improved, but Ajax was not able to sustain a good series of games. Because none of the teams really stood out with three matches to go Ajax still had a (theoterial) chance on the division championship, but because Ajax only got 1 point Ajax ended with 23 points as fifth still 6 points from division champion RCH. RCH went on the win the champions competition.

Beker

There was no Dutch Cup competition during this season.

Lineup

Because new players had to be fitted into the team and Ajax was also confronted with injuries again, especially in the attack there were quite some changes. The following players made regular appearances: Jan de Boer (goalkeeper), Frans Couton and Fons Pelser (defense), Henk Hordijk, Joop Pelser, and André de Kruijff (midfield and stopper spil), Eddy Hamel, Frans Rutte, Theo Brokmann Sr., Hein Delsen and Wim Addicks (forward). Joop Pelser was captain. In the attack the following players were also used: Ko van der Vlis (9), Nico Buwalda (8), Herman Geestman (8), Kick Geudeker (4), Theo Schetters (2), Wim de Bois (1). Furthermore Joop Martens (11), Gerard Deen (3), Jan van Heeswijk (vervangt keeper De Boer 3 maal), A.J. ten Herkel, Sjaak Hoogland, Engbert Bakker (1) played official matches.

Coach

Jack Reynolds is still the trainer.

First Division West

Before start of the season there are again talks about the First Division West. There is another attempt to replace the existing first division west and the transition division with two first division groups divided based on geography. Especially for the northern clubs, Ajax, Blauw-Wit, HFC Haarlem, this is considered disadvantageous as the stronger teams are more located in the south (Rotterdam, Den Haag), causing the competition for Ajax c.s. to loose attractivity. Resistence from the existing first division west delays the plan with one year.

General Meeting

During the general meeting the board was composed as follows: president W.F. Egeman, 2nd president H.D. Dade, 1st secretary J.J. Grootmeijer, 2nd secretary M.J. Koolhaas, 1st treasurer J. Oudheusden, 2nd treasurer J. Schoevaart. Committee members J. Pelser, F. Couton, and S. Tump.

Fons Pelser Suspended

Fons Pelser has trouble accepting the loss of Ajax against Blauw-Wit and shows this already during the match by, amongst other things, intentionally playing the ball with his hands, and for periods not actively participating in the game. Ajax&339; board decides to suspend him for a period of one month.

Dutch Corinthians

The association of first division teams gets competitions from a new association, the Dutch Continthians, who held a meeting at the start of 1923. This association had as goal to improve soccer for civilized people, and invited the older civilized clubs to the meeting: HVV, HBS, Sparta, VOC, DFC, HFC, HFC Haarlem and Quick. The other first division west teams, who had a labourer background, Ajax, Feyenoord, UVV, Blauw-Wit and RCH, were not invited. In principle the goals of going back to smaller competition sizes (maximum 10 teams, preferably 8) and more civilized gameplay are items the labour clubs would also support, but the meeting made clear that this elite clubs preferably would relive the old times, the talk about choosing their own opponents and playing a competition with only the 8 invited teams. Later Conrinthians came with a proposal to divide the first division west to introduce two groups of 8 teams, with in the First Division West A the civilized clubs and in B the labourer clubs. Later the First Division West clubs were united again. Many discussions followed, and the first division west clubs threatened to split offas they were unhappy with the their limited votes within the soccer association and felt the new competition (two groups of ten as First Division West) was forced upon them, and they had a problem with the lack of promotion relegation games. Finally it was decided to extend the first division west in the season 1923-24 with teams from the transition division and subdivide it in two groups of each ten teams, to grant more votes to the first division teams and to reinstaste in a limited way the promotion relegation games.

England Trip

This season Ajax made a trip to England to watch a semi finale of the English Cup and play against Middlesex Wanderers. The following players joined the trip: De Boer, Fons Pelser, Couton, De Kruijff, Hamel, Delsen, Brockmann, Addicks, Bakker, Hoogland, Deen, Rutte, and Van der Vlis.
