Ajax plays Sunday at 14:30 at home against PSV.

Ajax and PSV played 150 official matches against each other. Ajax won 65 of these meetings, drew 27 times, and lost 58. This is slightly in Ajax favor, because of the positive results in Dutch Cup and Champions Competition matches. However in de Eredivisie PSV has done better than Ajax, PSV won 49 times, Ajax 46 times.

Last season both matches ended in a win for the visiting team with 3-1.

The first meeting between Ajax and PSV in our archive in a friendly match in season 1928-29. In the 30s Ajax and PSV met eachother regularly in the Champions Competition in which Ajax was often the stronger team. Because PSV, just like Ajax, has played in the Eredivisie all seasons, the clubs met eachother frequently from 1956-57 onwards, which as mentioned above was slightly in PSV favor. The recent decennia the meetings between Ajax and PSV are regarded as the top matches of the Eredivisie, which is not strange considering in the past 20 seasons PSV has been champion 9 times and runner up 5 times, while Ajax was champion 8 time and runner up 6 times.

Frequently many goals were scored in these confrontations, by both clubs. As an example PSV won with 0-4, one of the goals was scored by current PSV coach Philip Cocu, on March 20, 2005, while Ajax won with 4-0 on March 14, 2010.

On average Ajax scores about 1.75 goals per match against PSV, and PSV only a fraction less. Five times a meeting ended in 0-0.

Johan Cruijff and Henk Groot are with 11 goals the most scoring Ajax players against PSV.

From the current Ajax squad Anwar El-Ghazi has scored twice against PSV.

From the current PSV squad Luciano Narsingh has played part of his youth at Ajax. Florian Jozefzoon played 5 official matches for Ajax 1. From the Ajax squad Riechedly Bazoer has played part of his youth at PSV before at the end of 2012 he announced his move to Ajax.

These are not many players if you consider the past. For example when PSV won the Europa Cup I in season 1987-88 former Ajax players Ronald Koeman, Gerald Vanenburg, Sören Lerby and Wim Kieft played the final for PSV. A trainer at that time reacted when someone made a remark about Ajax with the question: “Which Ajax? Ajax Amsterdam, or Ajax Eindhoven?”

Ajax is this season undefeated in the Eredivisie, while champion PSV has not had a strong start. If Ajax is able to beat PSV, PSV will already be 8 points behind Ajax.
