Dutch Competition

Ajax started strongly in the First Division West I and in the first half of the season only ZFC was able to take away 2 points from the confrontation with Ajax, while Ajax only played two draws. In the second half of the season Ajax won its first couple of matches and with (including the game against ZFC) still 6 matches to go the second confrontation with ZFC, who also hardly dropped points, was scheduled, that ended in a draw. It appeared it would be an exciting final parts of the competition, possibly ending with a decisive match, but DFC started to drop points whil Ajax kept winning and Ajax finished 5 points ahead becoming the division champion with a larger margin anyone had expected. The champions competition featured for the first time all three teams from the current traditional top three of the Netherlands (Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord). Ajax didn't start very impressive. PSV was beaten in Amsterdam, but Feyenoord was much too strong in Rotterdam and Ajax managed to take ”only“ 3 points away from the double confrontation against the weaker side Velocitas 1897. When Ajax subsequently beat Go Ahead twice, while PSV and Feyenoord shared the points, Ajax was back in the race. Ajax was unable to beat Feyenoord in Amsterdam (this became a draw), but was able to beat PSV in Eindhoven. Ajax was finished, PSV was eliminated and Feyenoord had one loss point less than Ajax, but still three games to play. Since those remaining games were against the weaker sides Go Ahead and Velociyas 1897, it was assumed Feyenoord would have a good chance to become the champion, but they only were able to gather one out of the possible 6 points, which meant Ajax was the new domestic champion with a relatively large margin.

Beker

There was no Dutch Cup competition during this season.

Lineup

There were only few changes compared to the previous season and the two players that were introduced already played many matches for Ajax 1: Jan Bonneveld (goalkeeper), Jan van Diepenbeek and Dolf van Kol (defense), Henk Anderiesen, Wim Anderiesen Sr. and Joop Martens (midfield and stopper spil), Bob ten Have, Wim Volkers, Piet van Reenen, Piet Strijbosch, and Henk Mulders (attack). Dolf van Kol was captain. Jan de Boer (8) again withdrew as goalkeeper but later in the season came into action again. Eddy Hamel started as rightwinger, but got injured. It is not really clear what happened to the position on the left midfield. Joop Martens played there a large part of the season, but because Joop Fijen (7) replaced spil Wim Anderiesen so well a position was created for him on the midfield, causing Joop Martens to be benched. However few matches later Henk Anderiesen, Joop Fijen and Joop Martens no longer play for reasons unknown to us, and Jan den Boer (8) was re introduced on the right midfield position and Strijbosch went from attack to left midfield position, eventhough earlier this and previous season he was very productive in the attack. Jan Schubert (4) took over the left central forward position. The following players also played official matches: Henk Twelker (8), Ben Vogel (6), Piet Vunderink (5), Piet van Deyck (2), Wim Addicks (1), and Daan van Os (1).

Coach

Jack Reynolds was the trainer.

Ajax Blauw-Wit combination against FC Wacker

July 9 a combination of Ajax and Blauw-Wit played again FC Wacker from Austria. De revenue was meant for a good cause: Het Vacantie Kinderfeest. From Ajax De Boer, Diepenbeek, Van Kol, Mulders, Van Reenen and Strijbosch played. FC Wacker won with 0-2.

Annual Meeting

During the annual meeting that Ajax held early August it became clear from the reports of the treasurer and secretary that Ajax was doing well. For the board Frans Schoevaart, Oudheusden, Desmit and de Bois were reelected. Theo Brokmann Sr. replaced Smit, who resigned, as a commissioner.

Jan de Boer

Just before the start of the competition Jan de Boer withdrew himself as Ajax' goalkeeper. Later in the season he replaced Jan Bonneveld again.

Dutch Soccer Association Forbids Live Radio Match Report

When the two title contenders for the First Division West I, Ajax and ZFC, met, there was a lot of interest and Ajax intended to cooperate for a live radio match report. The Dutch soccer association forbade this because this would potentially cause less people to visit other matches. Ajax liked to cooperate because in this way it could, what was estimated, let the 50000 interested soccer fans follow the match live, while the stadium could only fit 13000 people.

Wim Anderiesen Sr.

Wim Anderiesen Sr. had to miss several matches this season due to his work as a police agent. Both Ajax and fans are somewhat annoyed that both the police seems to have little consideration for the soccer matches and that there are no colleagues that are willing to change shifts with him. Especially since there are rumours that when Anderiesen played for the police club APGS instead of Ajax a couple of seasons before, he never had to miss a match.

Professor Isidore Snapper

One of the referees in the early years of Dutch soccer was Professor Isidore Snapper. Snapper was een bekend medicus and it happened that he not only refereed matches of Ajax, but also was consulted about injuries of players, for example when Dolf van Kol was faced with a muscle injury.

Joop Fijen

At the end of the division championship Fijen had replaced Wim Anderiesen on a number of occassions so well that the squad committee, when all players were available, wanted to bench Martens in favor of Fijen. The players revolted against this idea so that Martens could keep playing. Still, the first match for the champions competition Joop Fijen is playing lefthalf, without any mention of an innjury for Martens.

Switzerland Tour

At the end of the season Ajax made a trip to Switzerland to play some friendly matches.
