Dutch Competition

Ajax was in the running for the division championship of the First Division West I throughout the season, but didn't stand out. Impressive wins like the 5-1 against competitor RCH and the 9-0 against Haarlem were followed by dropping points against the lesser opponents. Still this performance was well enough to secure the top spot one round before the end, finishing in the end ranking 3 points ahead of RCH and ADO. The lack of stability in the performance caused Ajax to finish only second in a very exciting champions competition. Ajax was able to beat the new domestic champion Go Ahead twice, but did not perform well against Blauw-Wit (only 1 point) and Willem II and Velocitas, which Ajax beat with a very large margin at home, but lost from in the away games.

Beker

Because Ajax participated in the champions competition it was mainly the players from Ajax II that came into action for the Dutch Cup matches when these started for Ajax in the end of April. However Ajax had a very strong second team with a lot of players with first team experience such as Bob ten Have, Wim de Bois, Ben Vogel, Wim Addicks, Joop Martens, Hennie Windt and Henk Anderiesen. As a result Ajax did not have too much trouble to, starting in round 3 because first division teams did not have to participate in the first two rounds, get past Stormvogels, PEC, Forward, Palemig and BVV to reach the semi final. In the semi final match again Feyenoord, that was played few days after Ajax had missed out on the domestic championship, the first team players participated, but couldn't prevent Feyenoord from beating Ajax with 1-2.

Lineup

Because only few players left Ajax those years and frequently players came through from the youth and lower teams or came over from other clubs, the group of more or less same quality players for the first team became larger each season. Because of this players who lost their position due to injury or lack of performance had a hard time getting back into the first team squad. The players who played most matches were: Jan de Boer (goalkeeper), Jan van Diepenbeek and Dolf van Kol (defense), Theo Schetters, Wim Anderiesen Sr. and Joop Martens (midfield and stopper spil), Bob ten Have, Wim Volkers, Piet van Reenen, Piet Strijbosch, and Henk Mulders (attack). Dolf van Kol was captain. The second team players played some Dutch Cup matches on behalf of Ajax 1, so this way they also played offocial matches for Ajax 1. The following players played official matches next to the 11 players mentioned above: Piet van Deyck (14), Cor Jurriaans (10), Henk Anderiesen (9), Jan den Boer (8), Jan Bonneveld (8), Ben Vogel (8), Wim de Bois (6), Eddy Hamel (6), Wim Hangard (5), Wim Addicks (5), Jan Elzenga (5), Hennie Windt (5), Heinse (4), Henk Twelker (3), Joop Kuipers (1) and Daan van Os (1).

Coach

Jack Reynolds was the trainer.

Tour through Central Europe

After the season ended Ajax made a trip through Central Europe and visited Zagred, Vienna and Bratislava. Besides Hamel and Twelker the full Squads of Ajax I and II joined in the trip and there were also special matches organized for the reserves team.

Gerrit Keizer

In June it was announced that Gerrit Keizer, the previous season a stand-in goalkeeper for Ajax, had signed on to Arsenal as a professional soccer player.

Ajax - Rapid 16 - 2

Ajax hurt its reputations, and the reputation of Dutch soccer in general, by losing with 16-2 from Rapid Vienna. This is the largest loss ever of Ajax.
