Dutch Competition

Ajax has a strong start and half way the competition it takes the fourth place. However in the second half of the season Ajax only accumulates few points and ends in the 9th position. A reason for the disappointing second half of the season could be that Ajax is faced with injuried and players leaving. Especially when Karel van der Lee is no longer playing Ajax does not accumulate many points anymore.

Beker

Ajax enters the Dutch Cup competition again and the Dutch soccer association holds the same principle as the previous season, namely that first division teams are free the first two rounds. The third round Ajax wins from DVS, but in the next round (last 16) Ajax is beaten by VFC. Ajax plays with second team players becauase on the same day it has planned a second match which is more presitigious. Ajax tried to no avail to get the cup match rescheduled, as the other match, a friendly celebrating Ajax 12 1/2 year anniversary, but the soccer association did not honor their request.

Lineup

At the start of the season Ajax seems in a luxury position with respect to the lineup, as compared to last season only Louis Seijlhouwer has left, while Wim Vermeer and Jean Gilissen have joined the ranks. However when later in the season because of different reasons Henk Alofs, Piet van den Broecke and Karel van der Lee are no longer available, players from the second team are necessary to complete the lineup. Because of these changes in availability, there is not really one recurring lineup throughout the season. Players who played regularly are: Gerard Ziegeler (goal), Karel van der Lee and Frans Schoevaart (in the newspapers he is often referred to with his nickname Swift) (defense) Adriaan Pelser, Jan Schoevaart and Ge Fortgens (midfield and stopper spil), Jean Gilissen, Toon Kooi, Wim Vermeer, Jan Grootmeijer and Joop Pelser (attack). Karel van der Lee is missing the second half of the season, which is compensated partly by Chris Holst and partly by letting Jean Gilissen play in defense. Henk Alofs (4) and Piet van den Broecke (5) played regularly for Ajax before they left. Anton Buijen, Chris Kammeijer and Frits Terwee played regularly. Velsing (also Velzing or Felsing) played one time. Joop van Dort played several friendlies and one competition match. Frans Schoevaart was the captain.

Coach

John Kirwan is the trainer, just like the previous season.

Atheltic Matches

During the summer break In August athletic games are organized by a special athletic committee of the Amsterdam soccer association. Anton Buijen wins the 100m before J.J. Grootmeijer. Also J. Goosen and L.F. Dekker participate in the 100m. J.M.G. Bosch finishes 3rd in the 400m and 800m. Also with a team with J. Bosch, J.M.G Bosch, J.J. Grootmeijer, Anton Buijen, Ajax becomes 3rd in a relay race. After this Ajax also organised athletic events for their members.

Zilveren Voetbal

Ajax does not participate in the competition for the Zilveren Voetbal because around that time they celebrate their 12 1/2 anniversary. Besides that they also have other commitments on September 8, the date of the first round of matches for the Zilveren Voetbal.

Improvements Stadium

During the summer break Ajax further improved the accomodations of the new stadium, amongst other things the stands have been extended, a small office is built in which before and during matches someone from the board will be present, a number of toilets have been introduced, and the temporary changing rooms under the stand has been replaced with definitive ones. Besides that Ajax introduces season tickets for the first time, meant for people that do not like the long queues or crowds when buying tickets. On September 17 1912 it is mentioned that Ajax is introducing a new thing, lighted pitch. Moveable lights are used and the goal is to be able to train in the evenings, not to play matches.

12 1/2 Year Anniversary

The 12 1/2 year anniversary is celebrated starting from September 18 with a number of events for members, some of them including partners, and ends with a match against Tunbridhe Wells FC on September 22 that is open to the public.

Gouden Kruis

Ajax initially intended to participate in the Gouden Kruis competition in Amsterdam, but withdraws shortly before it starts. The organization does not allow Ajax to play with the second team, and the first team does not want to play, partly because of a recent series of tough matches, partly because as the only first division team in Amsterdam, there is only little honor to be gotton from participating in the Gouden Kruis competition.

Relation with Amsterdam Soccer Association

Ajax intended to plan some friendly matches in March and April, because they want to offer the first team to have some regular serious matches as the regular competition is almost finished. Ajax gets a lot of criticism when they play a friendly match on a day that Blauw-Wit is playing a home game, as Blauw-Wit is afraid of missing out on a lot of takings. In the end the intended opponent, Quick, cancels because of this reason. Ajax defends itself in a letter to the newpaper, which is placed, in which the board explains they intended to keep the wishes of other clubs as much as possible, but due to incorrect behavior of the Amsterdam soccer association and the many Amsterdam soccer clubs it was almost impossible to keep everyone happy. Later the Amsterdam soccer association reacts with a letter in the newspaper in which they refute the criticism. The next season the board of the Amsterdam soccer association mentions during a special general meeting that the issue between the association and Ajax has been resolved.

Member Meeting

During the general member meeting in April 1913 Ajax decides to hire John Kirwan for another season. Besides that it is decided to form a 3 member commission for training players during the upcoming annual general meeting. Karel van der Lee and Henk Alofs, who both left, become honorary members. Jan Schoevaart is elected as board commissary

Annual General Meeting

End May the Annual General Meeting is held. In the yearly report there is quite some criticism at how things are going with Ajax. One area of criticism is that personal interest is regarded more important than club interest, and that the board does not function in a homogenous way. The interest of players in the lower teams is limited, caused by incompletenes and by the competition setup of the Amsterdam soccer association. Furthermore it is reported that relations with the Dutch and Amsterdam soccer association are not good. The numbers of the season are 209 members and 252 donating members. The expenses of 25249 guilders supercede the match revenues of 25000 guilders. As the board the following people are (re)elected: 1st president W.F. Egeman, 2nd president Chris Holst, 1st secretary Henk Schutte, 2nd secretary G.E. Hemme, 1st treasurer C.F. Fetter, 2nd treasurer C.B. Reeser, commissioners: J.G. Ranik, J. Schoevaart, J. Pelser. Trainingscommittee: J.G. Rauer, J. Schoevaart, H. Rubens. Audit Committee: Jhr Eysinga, J. Th. de Waal, G.C.C. Reeser. Inquiry Committee: H. Rubens, Jhr. Eysinga, G.E. Hemmen, Chr. Holst, W.F. Egeman. Team Committee: J. Pelser, J.G. Rauch, Jhr. Eysinga, H. Rubens, A.J. Schuurman. Representatives for the various associations: NVB: Henk Schutte. AVB: W.F. Egeman, H. Schutte, Chris Holst, C.F. Fetter. NAU: J.G. Rauch, P. Welsink.

Reliability Data

Information about lineups and goalscorers this season is incomplete and unreliable. The main source used are newspaper reports and information often differs between different newspapers, sometimes newspapers also explicitly mention it is unknown when a goal is scored, and it is common that it is only mentioned that certain regular players are not playing, not who is playing instead. As much as possible we try to point out the information we are uncertain about.
