Season Result Summary
1954-55 Main D, Endranking: 3 At the start of the season the two soccer associations started with separate competition and Ajax led the First Division B after nine rounds. After the associations agreed to merge new competitions were started, in which Ajax, in the First Division D, also had a good season, but ended behind the new division championship Eindhoven and VVV. In the champions competition Eindhoven ended in the last spot.
1953-54 Playoff A, Lost in Final (DWS) Ajax had quite a good season in the First Division A, and because none of the teams stood out, Ajax was competing for the title uptil the end. Unfortunately for Ajax the goal difference and mutual results were not decisive in case two teams had the same amount of point, but a decisiove match needed to be played. That was the case this season when DWS and Ajax ended both with 37 points. In the competition Ajax had won twice from DWS, but in the decisive match DWS was soon ahead with 3-0 and won the match with 5-2 and so became the division champion. In the champions competition DWS ended last and Eindhoven became the new domestic champion.
1952-53 Main A, Endranking: 3 Ajax had a reasonable season in the First Division West A, but was not stable enough to be a contender for the division title. Ajax ended third 9 points behind the division champion RCH. RCH was also able to win the domestic championship just ahead of Eindhoven and Sparta.
1951-52 Main B, Endranking: 1 Ajax played in a division with mostly northern teams. It was soon clear Ajax would win the competition and the 9 point lead would have been larger if Ajax would not have lost its last 4 matches after the division championship was secured. This easy division championship was followed by a very poor performance in the champions competition. Ajax lost 5 matches in a row and was only in the last match able to have a draw and score the only point. Ofcourse the opposition in the champions competition was stronger, but Ajax was also forced by injuries and a suspension to deviate from the lineup that brought the division championship, which was not beneficial for the result.
1950-51 Main B, Endranking: 8 In the new competition setup Ajax was placed in a group with mainly eastern teams. Ajax was not able to play a significant role and ended as the number 8 8 points from the division champion DWS. In the champions competition DWS became second behind the new domestic champion PSV.
1949-50 Main West II, Endranking: 1 Ajax quite easily won the First Division West II competition and the relatively small difference with the number 2 De Volewijckers is partly explained by the fact that Ajax last the home game against De Volewijckers after it had already won the competition. We are not implying that Ajax was unbeatable and would have won easily otherwise, because eventhough Ajax only dropped 5 points in the division competition, Ajax didn't stand a chance in the champions competition. With 4 wins and 6 losses, Ajax ended in the 4th spot, a long distance from the new domestic champion SV Limburgia.
1948-49 Main West I, Endranking: 4 Ajax started quite weak with the First Division West I competition and later had a better period, but was only able to finish 4th place, 9 points from the new division champion SVV. SVV went on to win the champions competition as well.
1947-48 Main West I, Endranking: 3 Ajax had a very weak season in the First Division West I, but it was still able to compete for the title, in theory, for a long time, and ended third. Another way of looking at this season is that Ajax only ended 3 points above the number 10 of the competition.
1946-47 Main West I, Endranking: 1 Ajax started well in the First Division West I competition and had a good season. Feyenoord was able to get 3 points from the matches with Ajax, but because Ajax dropped only few points the division championship was achieved with a margin. Feyenoord ended second 5 points behin Ajax. In the champions competition Ajax started with getting 3 points from the two matches against SC Heerenveen. Heerenveen also turned out to be the only competitor, and only dropped few points. Ajax lost only once and quite easily became domestic champion with 3 points ahead of SC Heerenveen.
1945-46 Main West I, Endranking: 1 In the First Division West I competition De Volewijckers and Ajax with a large gap with the rest battled together for the division championship. The matches between them ended in two draws and in the other matches Ajax did a bit better than De Volewijckers. Partly because Ajax lost a match after the championship was already won, the difference with De Volewijckers was only 1 point. In the champions competition Ajax lost the first three away matches and even though the rest of the matches were won, this was not enough to become the new domestic champion. HFC Haarlem became the new champion, 1 point ahead of Ajax.
1944-45 Was not held.
1943-44 Main West II, Endranking: 2 Eventhough Ajax used a lot of the same players as in the previous season, which ended reasanobly well, Ajax started again very poorly with the First Division West II competition. In the first 8 matches Ajax was able to win only twice and lost 4 times. From round 9 onwards Ajax won a number of matches in a row, closing the series with a 8-0 win over leader VUC. There were only 3 matches remaining and suddenly Ajax had a realistic change of taking the division championship again. VUC still dropped some points, but because Ajax was able to get only 3 points from the last 3 games, VUC ended first and Ajax became second 2 points behind. In the champions competition VUC ended second behind De Volewijckers.
1942-43 Main West II, Endranking: 6 Ajax had a very weak first half of the First Division West II competition, from the 9 matches 7 were lost and Ajax was in last place. Afterwards it went better, Ajax was able to win three games in a row and improved a few spots where it remained. Ajax ended in 6th position on 15 points from division champion Feyenoord. In the champions competition Feyenoord became second to ADO, the new domestic champion.
1941-42 Main West I, Endranking: 6 Ajax had an average season and ended in 6th position with 5 points from the new division champion ADO, whom also dropped quite some points. After round 14 Ajax had all of a sudden still a chance to keep ADO from the division championship, but with only 3 out of the possible 8 points in the remaning 4 games that remained to be an illusion. ADO subsequently won the champions competition and became the new domestic champion.
1940-41 Main West II, Endranking: 2 In the First Division West II VSV was by far the best. Ajax had a reasonable season, had to fit in several new players, and ended together with HFC Haarlem 8 points behind the new division champion VSV. In the games between HFC Haarlem and Ajax, HFC Haarlem was better, but Ajax became second on basis of a better goaldifference. In the champions competition VSV didn't have a chance and Heracles became the new domestic champion.
1939-40 Main West I, Endranking: 6 Ajax started reasonably at the emergency competition, but halfway lost one match after the other. Ajax used the rest of the season to try out several new players, but was not very successful. It ended 6th 12 points from new division champion Blauw-Wit. Blauw-Wit finished the champions competition together with Heracles and Juliana 2 points from the new domestic champion Feyenoord. Ajax participated in the championship of Amsterdam, together with 5 other Amsterdam clubs, but was unable to impress. Ajax ended in 5th spot, 3 points from winner Volewijckers.
1938-39 Main West II, Endranking: 1 Ajax made a weak start in the First Division West II competition and after 10 matches Ajax had already lost three times and played two draws. Still league leader Feyenoord was still within reach and after Ajax beat Feyenoord in Amsterdam in round 12 with 5-0 the gap was only two points. Ajax continued to win, only played one more draw, but that was in the last round when the division championship was already won. In the champions competition there was no team sticking out and even though Ajax lost once and played two draws, they became the new domestic champion relatively easy.
1937-38 Main West I, Endranking: 2 In the First Division West I competition Ajax started reasonable, but had a weaker period halfway the competition. Not withstanding a good series of matches, DWS stayed out of reach and the last competition game against DWS, which was won by Ajax, was no longer relevant for the outcome of the competition. Ajax became second one point behind new division champion DWS. DWS subsequently became third in the champions competition behind the new domestic champion Feyenoord.
1936-37 Main West I, Endranking: 1 Ajax started very convincingly at the First Division West I competition. In the 10th match Ajax beat the closest competitor DHC with 9-2, making Ajax, who had played only one draw, take a lead of 7 points. Afterwards Ajax dropped more points, but still became division champion with 30 points, 9 ahead of Xerxes and Blauw-Wit. In the champions competition Ajax lost only one match (in Rotterdam against Feyenoord), winning the rest, which made them the new domestic champion, 4 points ahead of Feyenoord and PSV.
1935-36 Main West I, Endranking: 1 Ajax starts weak in the First Division West I competition and loses already 3 times in the first 6 matches. Ajax remains to have poor results and after 12 matches Ajax is ranked 6th with 13 point. Because the leading teams also keep dropping points the gap with the leader (Sparta, 17 points) is still manageable, although Ajax was no longer considered as a candidate for the division championship. However Ajax kept winning and because the other teams kept dropping points Ajax was able to take the number one spot with one game to go. A draw in the last round against the number two HBS would have been sufficient, but Ajax was also able to won that game. In the champions competition Ajax started weak again by losing twice, at home against Feyenoord and away against SC Enschede. Ajax recovered but when losing 5-4 to Be Quick too many points were dropped. Ajax was able to beat Feyenoord in Rotterdam, but still ended one point begin Feyenoord in second place.
1934-35 Main West I, Endranking: 1 Ajax started very week in the First Division West I competition by already losing twice and having one draw in the first 5 matches. Ajax recovered, but in the 8th round there was already a crucial match. Feyenoord, who hadn't lost yet, came to visit and if they would be able to beat Ajax, they would be out of reach. Ajax however won with a large margin and kept on winning (only played one more draw in the remainder of the competition) and when one round from the last Ajax was able to beat Feyenoord in Rotterdam as well, they finally went in the lead and one round later became the division champion. In the champions competition Ajax did not perform well anymore. The lengthy previous season and the lack of a summer break became a problem, Ajax was not only faced with various injured played, but the team just didn't perform well anymore. Ajax lost twice from both the number 1 (PSV) and 2 (Go AHead), while it was still able to beat the numbers 4 (Velocitas 1897) and 5 (DWS) twice.
1933-34 Main West I, Endranking: 1 Ajax won the First Division West I competition by a large margin. In the second round Ajax lost, but afterwards Ajax had a long winning streak that only finished in the last round, when Ajax lost its second game, but by then the division championship was won already. Ajax finished with 10 points ahead of VSV and 11 ahead of Feyenoord, who played in the same league as Ajax, for a chance. The subsequent champions competition had never been more close: Ajax, KFC and Willem II together end up on first place. Ajax had a better goal difference, but the regulations indicated this would not be decisive for the championship, so decisive matches were necessary. In the first two matches Ajax and KFC were both able to beat Willem II and in the last match KFC was leading with 2-0 by half time. Ajax scored the 2-1 early in the second half, but took until the last minutes to make the equalizer. Because Ajax had won with a larger margin from Willem II than KFC had, and because goal difference was decisive for the decision matches, Ajax was the new domestic champion.
1932-33 Main West II, Endranking: 2 Ajax started poorly in the First Division West II and in the first four round already played three draws. When Ajax lost in round 6 and was beaten by leader Stormvogels with 5-0 in round 8 it was clear maintaining the division championship would be very hard. Ajax remained to be a contender, but since Stormvogels dropped little points Ajax didn't come close and finished second with 24 points, 5 less than new division champion Stormvogels. Subsequently Stormvogels was unable to play a significant role in the champions competition and finished 3rd. Go Ahead became the new domestic champion and Feyenoord missed the title for the second year in a row with only one point.
1931-32 Main West I, Endranking: 1 In the First Division West I it was clear from the start that Ajax would become division champion again. Ajax only dropped significant points just before and after the competition was won. Afterwards Ajax started strongly with the champions competition and after Ajax had beaten Feyenoord in Rotterdam a home win against Feyenoord would be sufficient to become domestic champion again. However Feyenoord was able to beat Ajax in Amsterdam and because Feyenoord had also hardly dropped points Ajax was only one point ahead with both still two games to go. Both won the remaining two games, causing Ajax to just stay ahead of Feyenoord and remaining the domestic champion.
1930-31 Main West I, Endranking: 1 Ajax started strongly in the First Division West I and in the first half of the season only ZFC was able to take away 2 points from the confrontation with Ajax, while Ajax only played two draws. In the second half of the season Ajax won its first couple of matches and with (including the game against ZFC) still 6 matches to go the second confrontation with ZFC, who also hardly dropped points, was scheduled, that ended in a draw. It appeared it would be an exciting final parts of the competition, possibly ending with a decisive match, but DFC started to drop points whil Ajax kept winning and Ajax finished 5 points ahead becoming the division champion with a larger margin anyone had expected. The champions competition featured for the first time all three teams from the current traditional top three of the Netherlands (Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord). Ajax didn't start very impressive. PSV was beaten in Amsterdam, but Feyenoord was much too strong in Rotterdam and Ajax managed to take ”only“ 3 points away from the double confrontation against the weaker side Velocitas 1897. When Ajax subsequently beat Go Ahead twice, while PSV and Feyenoord shared the points, Ajax was back in the race. Ajax was unable to beat Feyenoord in Amsterdam (this became a draw), but was able to beat PSV in Eindhoven. Ajax was finished, PSV was eliminated and Feyenoord had one loss point less than Ajax, but still three games to play. Since those remaining games were against the weaker sides Go Ahead and Velociyas 1897, it was assumed Feyenoord would have a good chance to become the champion, but they only were able to gather one out of the possible 6 points, which meant Ajax was the new domestic champion with a relatively large margin.
1929-30 Main West I, Endranking: 1 Ajax was in the running for the division championship of the First Division West I throughout the season, but didn't stand out. Impressive wins like the 5-1 against competitor RCH and the 9-0 against Haarlem were followed by dropping points against the lesser opponents. Still this performance was well enough to secure the top spot one round before the end, finishing in the end ranking 3 points ahead of RCH and ADO. The lack of stability in the performance caused Ajax to finish only second in a very exciting champions competition. Ajax was able to beat the new domestic champion Go Ahead twice, but did not perform well against Blauw-Wit (only 1 point) and Willem II and Velocitas, which Ajax beat with a very large margin at home, but lost from in the away games.
1928-29 Main West I, Endranking: 8 Ajax started very weak in the First Division West I. Ajax won its first game only after having lost 4 and drawn once and had to wait until match 11 before the second win. Afterwards it went better and Ajax played itself out of the relegation zone. Ajax was able to win four of the last seven matches and ended in 8th spot 11 points behind division champion Sparta. Sparta was unable to play a significant role in the champions competition, that was won by PSV.
1927-28 Main West I, Endranking: 1 Ajax only dropped points twice in the First Division West I causing the division championship to be a sure thing almost from the start. In the champions competition Ajax was beaten twice by Feyenoord, causing Feyenoord to be the new domestic champion.
1926-27 Main West I, Endranking: 1 In the First Division West I Ajax started strong and from the start Ajax was the favorite for the division championship. Although not all games were very impressive the division championship, partly due to two wins from the number two Stormvogels, always stayed within reach. In the champions competition Ajax finished third after new domestic champion Heracles and NAC, just ahead of Feyenoord.
1925-26 Main West II, Endranking: 4 Halfway the competition Ajax was doing well with 14 points out of 9 matches in the First Division West II, but a lot of teams were still together, so was Feyenoord based on points in the 6th position, while it had the same amount of lost points as Ajax with one game in hand. Ajax was unable to keep hold of the good position and finished 1 point behind Feyenoord in 4th position. Feyenoord finished the champions competition 3rd behind the new domestic champion SC Enschede.
1924-25 Main West II, Endranking: 3 Ajax had a good season in the First Division West II, but was not constant enough to be a serious title contender. To illustrate: Ajax won with 11-1 at home from the number 9 UVV, but lost 2-3 at home to the number 10. Ajax became third at six points from division champion HBS. HBS went on to win the championscompetition.
1923-24 Main West I, Endranking: 6 After splitting up the First Division West into two groups Ajax started poorly in the First Division West I, the first home game was last. In the 9 following games Ajax won each home game, but lost each away game, until in the 11th game, away against Feyenoord, Ajax was able to win. Also afterwards Ajax was unable to get consistent good results so that it finished in the mid of the table, further away from new division champion Feyenoord than from the bottom position. Feyenoord went on to win the champions competition.
1922-23 Main West, Endranking: 5 In the First Division West Ajax started poorly, partly because there were some new players in the attack, and because it was faced with some injuries. Later on the results improved, but Ajax was not able to sustain a good series of games. Because none of the teams really stood out with three matches to go Ajax still had a (theoterial) chance on the division championship, but because Ajax only got 1 point Ajax ended with 23 points as fifth still 6 points from division champion RCH. RCH went on the win the champions competition.
1921-22 Main West, Endranking: 3 Ajax starts very week by only winning for the first time in round 6, afterwards it goes better and with 6 games to go Ajax gets into the leading position by beating Blauw-Wit. However Ajax only wins one game afterwards while Blauw-Wit doesn' loose many points, so that Ajax finishes 6 points from the new champions Blauw-Wit in the third position. In the champions competition Blauw-Wit finishes second after Go Ahead.
1920-21 Main West, Endranking: 1 In the First Division West Ajax and Blauw-Wit longtime lead the competition together, almost won all games and about halfway the competition dropped points at the same time, until the last 5 rounds in which Blauw-Wit lost so many points that the final match, Ajax - Blauw-Wit, was no longer relevant for the final standings. Ajax became division champion and Blauw-Wit finished second on six points behind. Ajax started well in the champions competition by beating Go Ahead in the away game with 0-5, but when subsequently the games against NAC (at home) and Be Quick (away) were lost, Ajax knew it would be difficult. Ajax beat Go Ahead at home, but when NAC (away) beat Ajax the championship was out of reach. Ajax did play an important role by beating the leaders Be Quick in the last round so that NAC became the champion.
1919-20 Main West, Endranking: 5 After having become the undefeated division and domestic champion in the previous season, this season Ajax ends at the 5th position in the First Division West. Ajax misses Frits Terwee on the midfield who left to HFC Haarlem and misses Jan de Natris (the first 3 months) and Hein Delsen (the complete season) because of suspension, which undoubtedly contributed to the disappointing result. Besides the suspensions Gupffert and Van Dort are faced with injuries. VOC becomes the division champion just before HBS, but in the champions competition finishes only second after Be Quick.
1918-19 Main West A, Endranking: 1 Ajax starts the competition very well, for the first time drops a point in the 9th competition match and at the end of 1918 has won 11 and drawn 2 and the competition is far behind. In the remainder of the competition only one draw will follow, the rest of the matches are won, so that Ajax wins the division championship again. Blauw-Wit becomes second 11 points behind Ajax. In the champions competition Ajax stays unbeaten for the first 7 matches, but because of 3 draws Go Ahead is able to stay near Ajax and the championship is not sure yet. Because the last match of Ajax is moved from a Thursday (Hemelvaartsdag) to the next Sunday and Go Ahead looses their last game, Ajax becomes champion without playing. Ajax wins the last game, so stays unbeaten throughout the domestic competition.
1917-18 Main West A, Endranking: 1 Now that the matches have more meaning things are not as fantastic anymore as they were in the previous season for Ajax, but still Ajax knows to make a good impression in the competition from the start and fights for top ranking. When Sparta looses some matches halfway the competition the championship seems to be be fought out between Blauw-Wit, HFC Haarlem and Ajax. Especially in the matches between these clubs Ajax does well (two wins against HFC Haarlem and one win against Blauw-Wit) and when the last match against Blauw-Wit is played Ajax has a great position: with (for Ajax) only 5 matches to go, of which 4 at home, Ajax has 4 losspoints less than Blauw-Wit and HFC Haarlem. Ajax does not falter and plays only one draw and wins the other 4 remaining matches and becomes the division champion of the 1ste division for the first time and participates in the champions competition. Ajax starts the championscompetition very strong by winning the first 4 games, but when everone thinks Ajax is already champion Ajax only gets one point from the double confrontation with Go Ahead. Afterwards Ajax wins twice which is enough to become the Dutch champion for the first time.
1916-17
1915-16
1914-15
1913-14 Main West, Endranking: 10 Ajax does not have a good start of the competition, but Quick seems to be the most likely candidate to have to play the promotion relegation matches that come with ending up at the last position in the competition. In round 8 Ajax beats Quick and with that just has its second win, with only one draw. For Quick that match was the 8th loss in a row. However Quick is starting to gather points after that round, and because they also protest against one of their losses which is subsequently turned into a draw, after round 14 Quick has 11 points, while Ajax is in the last position with just 8 points. In the 15th round Ajax looses from Quick with 5-0, and the gap to the safe 9th position is too large, also because other competitors keep gathering points as well. Ajax plays the promotion relegation competition with Hercules, looses the first match at home and away does not get further than a draw, which makes the relegation a fact.
1912-13 Main West, Endranking: 9 Ajax has a strong start and half way the competition it takes the fourth place. However in the second half of the season Ajax only accumulates few points and ends in the 9th position. A reason for the disappointing second half of the season could be that Ajax is faced with injuried and players leaving. Especially when Karel van der Lee is no longer playing Ajax does not accumulate many points anymore.
1911-12 Main West, Endranking: 8 Ajax has a hard time preseason and during the first rounds, as newcomer in the first division. Ajax looses 5 games in a row. Afterwards Ajax regularly gets points and is able to finish 8th.
